When I started this course the only Fiber Arts I knew were knitting, friendship bracelets, some simple sewing and how to make Ojos de Dios. My main goal this quarter was to learn how to do some basic macrame knots and create a macrame wall hanging with those skills. Once I felt I had accomplished this goal I still had more time, so I decided to do a circle embroidery piece after seeing one of my friends do it. My goal for the circle embroidery piece was to embroider a city at night with fireworks. I think I met my goals for this quarter successfully. I had some problems with my macrame piece because I didn’t realize how long I needed to make the strings to have a piece as long as mine was, so I had to hot glue on more string. A positive thing I took away from the experience was the fact that the next time I do macrame I will have more experience and it will hopefully go a little smoother.
This quarter I became more familiar with Embroidery and Macrame. I was drawn to macrame because I had tried it before unsuccessfully about two years ago and I always thought it was a beautiful type of art. Macrame is usually credited to Arabic weavers from the 13th century, but decorative knot tying can also be found in China in the 3rd century. Some advice I would offer to someone trying to do macrame would be that whatever you do with the strings is still a knot so even if it doesn’t turn out like you wanted, you still did macrame.
I was drawn to embroidery because I saw a friend start a circle embroidery piece and thought it looked really cool. People have been embroidering since there was fabric to embroider on. It is believed it was started somewhere in China. The word Embroidery, however, comes from French roots. Some advice I would give to someone who is embroidering would be, don’t be a perfectionist about it because it’s so hard to get embroidery perfect, just go with what you’ve got and make it as good as you can.
My goal as an artist is to explore all kinds of art styles and produces pieces of art with them. My projects did help me get closer to my goal, I always thought of the fiber arts as more of a craft than a piece of art. This course has helped me understand that they’re kind of the same thing. My work turned out close to what I imagined. I didn’t imagine all the places where I glued on the string in my macrame but I’m fine with it since it was my first time. I think the things I have learned in this course will greatly inspire or influence my future artworks, both of the things I tried I thought were fun, and I saw a lot of people do other things that I want to try doing in the future.

When I first started this fiber arts elective I did not know much at all about making fiber arts. I have made an Ojo de Dios and a friendship bracelet but I had forgotten how to do it all. I remember really enjoying those two things so that is what I decided to make. My goals were to make these things fancier than I had made them before. I was able to meet these goals. I made little pom poms for the Ojo de Dias and only used two colors instead of three on the friendship bracelet. I used persistence to make different things interesting.
I made a friendship bracelet and a Ojo de Dios this quarter. They were difficult at first but once I figured it out it was really fun. I thought that the Ojo de Dios looked really awesome when I saw the pictures of it. For the friendship bracelet I thought it is a really special thing to make something for someone that you are close to. The Ojo de Dios is mainly found in Mexican and Mexican-American communities. It supposedly has the power to see and understand things that the human eye cannot. If someone else were to make an Ojo de Dios I would tell them to put something around it to make look even better. Friendship bracelets originated in Central America. It was introduced to the U.S. in the 1970’s. The friendship bracelet is supposed to be worn until it comes off by itself. This is to honor the great work of the person that gave it to you. If I were to give advice to someone who wanted to make a friendship bracelet I would tell them to either use more than three colors or use two of the same color.
My goals as an artist were to keep knowing how to make the things I learned in this course and to learn even more fiber art styles. I got closer to these goals by learning how to make two styles of fiber art. It did turn out how I imagined it to be, I was very happy with it. I expected lots of colors on my Ojo de Dias and that is what happened. I think in the future I will want to do more fiber arts and this inspired that.

When I came into this class I didn’t really know anything about fiber arts. I knew a little bit about knitting, but I didn’t know how to do anything. When setting my goals for this class I learned that I can do much more than I thought I could. I think a positive thing I could take from this was that I learned how to do three different techniques of fiber arts and that it was pretty fun doing them.
In this class I completed a cross stitch of a Michigan M with a basketball above it, a friendship bracelet, and an Ojo de Dios. I was drawn to cross stitching because it looked really fun and I wanted to make a block M somehow and cross stitching looked like a good way to do it. I was interested in making a friendship bracelet because my friends were making them and I wanted to make one too. I was drawn to making Ojo de Dios because some people who believe in its power which gives the ability to see things unknown to the physical eye.
One of my goals after doing this class is to try to make at least one of these things I learned and make it outside of the class. When I first started my projects I thought they were gonna look a little different than turned out but I feel like my projects still look good. I think this class will inspire me to try different styles of artwork and it will influence my future in art.

I really didn’t know much at all coming into this quarter. I had done some basic sewing a little bit of cross-stitch, and simple embroidery but I didn’t really like any of those when I tried them. I think I just wanted to improve in general. I hadn’t done much in fiber art before but so I just wanted to challenge myself by trying something I had never heard of or ever done before or something I had tried in the past that I remembered having trouble with. I tried to start out with embroidery, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t for me and I tried other techniques that didn’t require a lot of concentration or small work.
The two techniques that I tried were friendship bracelets and Ojos de Dios (god’s eyes). I was interested in friendship bracelets originally because I saw my friends doing them, but when I tried them I continued to get more and more interested in them. I tried four kinds, the Chinese staircase, the rope bracelet, the single striped bracelet, and the double striped bracelet. If someone was trying to try these bracelets, I would recommend keeping organized and keeping focused. There were lots of times that I was trying to finish a bracelet and I either wasn’t fully paying attention or I mixed in the wrong string or something like that that could have been easily avoided if I was just paying closer attention. I was interested in the god’s eyes because I knew that I enjoyed the friendship bracelets because you just used your hands, not a needle or anything like that, which I’ve found I like the best. The god’s eyes come from Mexico, where some people believe that they have the power to see and understand things that the eye can’t. I think the advice I would give someone who was trying to make this was to stick with it even though it might be a little complicated. God’s eyes are the sort of thing that looking at it you would think it would be easy, but there are some little intricacies in making it that can make it pretty confusing or hard to work through.
I didn’t have many goals going into this quarter because I wasn’t very experienced in fiber arts, I just wanted to see how well I could do. I think doing these projects definitely made me get better, I think seeing what I was interested in was cool and also practice in general improved my skills. I think that doing these two techniques influenced my future artwork because I learned that I enjoyed doing fiber arts techniques that use yarn or embroidery floss and things that are bigger scale. One other technique I later tried was finger knitting, which I really enjoyed.

When I joined this class, I partly joined because I knew lots about fiber arts and similar things. I was pretty well mastered at crocheting and sewing, as well as having a basic understanding of pretty much all the common fiber arts such as: knitting, embroidering, ojo de dios (wrapping yarn between sticks), macrame (less, but still a basic knowledge), weaving, and yarn things (such as finger knitting, braiding, and pom-poms). I wanted to “learn” new things (I say it in quotations because I already sort of knew about them, I wanted to expand my knowledge really).
This quarter I finished crocheting a stuffed cow I started making, made a macrame produce bag, embroidered a guitar, and started making a scarf (I had too many other things, so I finished it at home). I wanted to make a macrame produce bag because I’ve always thought that macrame was really interesting, and I've always wanted to try it, but never gotten around to it. For the guitar, I plan to give it to my mom’s boyfriend for Christmas because he plays guitar, and I’ve always loved the art of embroidering, though I’ve never tried it, my mom has tried it. For the scarf, I’ve wanted to perfect my knitting skills for a while (I used to know how, and I kind of still remembered), and I was going to finish it for my Halloween costume, but that’s not happening).
I’ve always loved art, especially the fiber arts. I’ve been sewing since I was 7 or 8, and crocheting since I was 9 or 10 (I’m 14 now) so this is really my strong suit. I have never been amazing at any other mediums, not great at drawing, painting, working with clay, printmaking, or collage making. I quite like how my art is coming, I don’t know if I'll finish by the end of the quarter, but otherwise I'll finish it at home.

In this class, we learned different kinds of fiber arts. The goal was by the end of the quarter to have at least two finished fiber art pieces.
Starting this class I knew how to knit, make basic friendship bracelets, and some experience in weaving from when I was younger. The goals I set for myself at the beginning of the quarter were to help as many people I could, improve my knotting skills, and to become more experienced and comfortable in fiber arts in general. I think overall I was able to reach these goals. I helped Tess and James with friendship bracelets and I tried to help some people with knitting. I learned new knots while making my macrame project, and making friendship bracelets at home. Finally, I learned different skills in weaving, so I was able to make a tree scene using bright and bold colors. Then I glued it to a black and white splatter background. There were a couple of times while I was working on my fiber arts projects, where I made a mistake. I think the best way to make mistakes positive is to make it a happy mistake by either repeating the mistake of adding something to make the mistake look like you meant to do it.
The first project that I made was a hanging macrame. I was drawn to doing this project because I already knew how to make friendship bracelets and I wanted to expand my knowledge by learning different types of knots and how to use them to make a piece to hang on a wall. Macrame comes from 13th century Arabic weavers. It references to different decorative kinds of fringes that were used on horses and camels. Macrame can help keep flies and other insects off of animals. It is also used as other essentials in houses like tablecloths and curtains. Some fisherman made them at sea and then they would seek the macrame when they were back on land. I would advise anyone who is working on macrame to take their time, be patient, and do not bring yourself down about your piece.

The second project that I made was a weaving project. I was drawn to this because when I was little I learned how to weave and I really enjoyed it. Now that I am older I thought it would be cool to expand my knowledge and learn different skills in the art of weaving. Weaving was probably created in West Asia, around 6000 BC. Weaving is used to making lots of different everyday things. For instance blankets, table cloths, etc. For anyone who is working in weaving, I would advise them to go with the flow of the weaving and sees what happens.
My goals as an artist are to keep doing fiber arts so I can keep learning and improving my skills. I think this class definitely helped me. I learned more than one technique in fiber arts and I expanded my knowledge. My weaving project did not turn out exactly how I pictured it. I thought it would be different colors bringing each other in from multiple places in the piece. Instead, it became a tree scene, which I like a lot more. On the other hand, my macrame project went mostly as I expected. This class inspired me to learn different techniques and maybe incorporate them into more art pieces I do in the future.

Going into this quarter, I knew how to sew, how to finger knit, how to make Ojos de Dios, and how to weave. When setting goals for the quarter, I made the goals of learning more about weaving, learning how to crochet, and learning how to macrame. While I was able to learn more about weaving, and a very little bit about macrame, I struggled with crochet.
This quarter, I became more familiar with weaving and I learned how to knit. I was drawn to weaving because I saw the weaving Deb made (the teal, gray, and white one with the tassels). Weaving was first invented about 6000 BCE. Weaving was prevalent in many ancient cultures, but originated in West Asia.
I was drawn to knitting because I found crochet too difficult, and knitting is similar to crochet. The oldest known example of a pair of socks from Egypt. The socks are from the 11th century.
My goal as an artist is to learn more about 3-D art. I want to learn about 3-D art because they can be used to make functional and decorative things. I did get closer to these goals, but I hoped that my knitting would have ended up longer than it is. This quarter will influence the art I do in the future because I found knitting fun and it is something that I don’t need to pay a lot of attention to while doing it.

I didn’t really know a lot of things about fiber arts except for a little bit of sewing. A lot of things looked pretty interesting so I wanted to do a variety of things. I think I did a good job with my cross-stitch and learning other things because I really spent a good amount of time on macrame and embroidery, as well as a lot on cross-stitch. I messed up on one part of it and left blank spaces, but then I improvised and made it fade out as I went. I thought I met my goals fairly well. I became familiar with cross-stitch and embroidery as well as a little bit of macrame. I liked cross-stitch because because of how geometric it is. The earliest cross-stitch was from about the 6th century B.C.E. It was found in Spain and Egypt. If I had any suggestions for someone getting into cross-stitch, I would say to really pay attention to spacing, start slow, and know that it takes a lot of time to make something. My second technique was embroidery. The early origin of embroidery dates back to about 30,000 B.C.E., or the era of the Cro-Magnons, but embroidery was really popularized in China during the 5th-3rd centuries B.C.E. For someone trying to get into embroidery, I would say that you have to be pretty precise.
Going into this class, I wasn’t super excited about it, but it was really fun. My goals as an artist are really just to work as hard as I can and do as well as I can. I think I did my best on this project. My work turned out fairly similar to what I imagined at the start because I was a little short on time, so I started leaving negative spaces. This could help me in the future with geometrical works of art.

What was known?
Coming into this class the main two things I had known about fiber arts were quilting and friendship bracelets. I have been hand sewing and using a sewing machine for a long time and have known about how to make lots of different friendship bracelets, but only knew one knot.
When I was first setting my goals for this class, I had wanted to work more with quilting but then decided to try to challenge myself by learning how to make macrame and how to do embroidery. And by the end of the quarter, I really felt like I met these goals. And was really glad I had challenged myself to try something new. I had to work a lot on managing my time wisely throughout this quarter to try to reach these goals because each project took a couple of weeks and so I think doing that really helped toward reaching my goals.

What did I accomplish?
The two fiber art practices I became familiar with were macrame and embroidery.
- Macrame - I first had wanted to learn how to macrame because I had been really into making friendship bracelets and I wanted to take macrame to the next level so decided to make a macrame wall hanging that was dyed with different shades of blue paint. Macrame originated during the 13th century from Arab weavers using it to tie off the ends of hand-woven textiles with decorative knots. They had used this technique when making bath towels, shawls, veils, and more. When learning how to macrame, the main advice I would give is to start by learning just the basic knots, such as the spiral knot and the square knot. The other advice I would give is you need to use a lot more macrame cord than you think because I made the mistake of starting out with way to little string and had to hot glue more string on.
- Embroidery - My embroidery piece was of different types and colors of flowers and plants that I came up with and sketched out. When choosing what I wanted to learn for my second technique I had originally wanted to learn cross stitch but then I had decided to try to learn embroidery because with embroidery you seemed to have more freedom with your pattern and could learn tons of different stitches whereas for cross stitch you were stuck with just doing the same x stitches over and over. Embroidery has existed as long as people were able to make fabric. Embroidery is used all over the world but people say it first originated from China and the Near East. The word embroidery is a French word which comes from the word “broderie”, broderie means embellishment. When trying to learn the technique the advice I would give is to sketch out your pattern first because it makes stitching it a whole lot easier but also make sure when sketching to sketch very light so you can’t see the pencil through the stitching. And also to not pick a super complicated pattern unless you have a long period of time to work on it because whatever you sketch takes at least 5-10 times as long to stitch.
Overall Thoughts
Some of my main goals as an artist were mainly just to get more familiar with fiber arts. Taking this class gave me a chance to become more familiar with fiber arts practices, which was really interesting.
I was really happy with how my embroidery turned out although I wish I had a little more time but end the end I thought it looked pretty good. For my macrame wall hanging, it didn’t turn out exactly how I imagined it. I think I sort of rushed into it without researching a ton so there were a few things that didn’t go exactly how I thought they would. But after working through the mistakes I like how it turned out considering that I really didn’t know much about macrame.
After taking this class, it really inspired me to try even more fiber art practices. I also want to learn more advanced embroidery stitches and do more embroidery in the future. I really enjoyed this class!

Coming in to fiber arts this quarter I had already acquired some various fiber skills. Among them, using sewing machines, hand stitching, and some small odds and ends. My original goal for this quarter was to cross stitch a QR code. A QR code is a barcode made out of squares. I expected this to be a simple beginners cross stitch project. After six attempts on my own I asked my dad to help with generating a simpler QR code. Upon asking him I learned about the different types of error correction that can be implemented. Even after getting a better QR code there were still many problems like that the squares in cross stitch aren’t perfect enough for a scanner to read them. After calling quits on the QR code, I used the little bit of code I made as a frame for some embroidery. The embroidery was way more successful than the cross stitching.
During this quarter I learned how to cross stitch. I didn’t actually search on the internet how to do this instead it looked at a picture and figured it out. This is just the way I like learning. After many tries at making the QR code I decided to try something else. I first look up how to tie a monkey first. A monkey fist is a type of complex knot done around a sphere. The monkey fist knot is both decorative and functional. After messing around with the monkey fist I decided to try my hand a finger knitting and crocheting. For the first time things were going well. I finger crochet a rope around 15 feet long, then I finger crocheted that rope so it became a “scarf-oid”. The finger knitting went just as well. After finger knitting for a while a wanted to experiment so I problem solved a way to increase and decrease the width of the product without changing the thickness of the yarn. I also found a way to make the knitted material twist into fun shapes.

The main material art forms I do regularly is metal and wood working. I have made many decorational pieces like hooks, and pendants as well as functional pieces like knives, hairpins, and small tools. Currently, I am making live edge hardwood shelves for a customer. The fiber arts main appeal for me is in knot tying, stitching and machine sewing. The QR code’s function failed but a little bit of form was salvaged. The finger knitting worked amazingly well, and this is definitely something to save for a long drive. For a little link regarding the legality of yarn bombing, click here

What I knew about starting Fiber Arts was how to knit and how to sew but I wasn’t very practiced in it so hopefully, I can get more practice. I challenged myself by learning how to do macrame knots and what macrame was and completing my macrame wall piece in time. I met my goals by finishing my wall piece and painting it, and it turned out better than I expected. A positive thing that I will take from this experience is that most of the macrame knots fit together and look good together so u can do different kinds of knots and it will still look good and I will also continue to try to keep macrame in my life and try different knots and definitely try other Fiber Arts.
In this quarter I did two fiber arts, macrame and finger knitting. Macrame was very beautiful and I really wanted to try it and I ended up liking it. Macrame comes from the 13th-century Arabic weavers. The word “migramah” which means "fringe" refers to the decorative fringes on camels and horses which helps to keep the flies off the animals in the hot desert regions of northern Africa. Macrame became very popular in the 1970s, people would use it for wall hangers, plant holders, handbags, etc. Some advice for this fiber art is that make sure u have all of your materials and if you are on a timed schedule make sure you find the time to do it outside of that time provided because it will help you catch up, finish on time and maybe even finish early.
I wanted to do finger knitting because I had tried it previously and it was very interesting and I enjoyed doing it and when I was done I attached the string to my macrame completing my macrame and having it hanging on my wall.
Knitting began in the Middle East and from there it came to Europe through Mediterranean trade routes and then to the Americas from Europe. The oldest knitted items have been found in Egypt and are dated between the 11th and 14th centuries AD, one of them which were knitted socks. Some advice for this fiber art is that make sure you have someone help you and show you how to finger knit before you start it yourself.
Some goals I have as an artist is to try other kinds of fiber arts and different types of arts in general, my projects did help me get closer to my goals, I never knew about fiber arts and I didn’t know anything about it until I took this art class and I really enjoyed doing it so I will definitely do it again, my work did turn out very well and I'm glad I got to do it. I didn’t get to paint my art piece but hopefully, I can find another time to do it. My work didn’t turn out how I imagined it thought it was gonna be bad but it turned out to be very good and I’m glad it did. I'm also very proud of myself that I did something different with art and that I reached a different comfort zone with myself and hopefully I can do that with other arts/fiber arts and have it turn out as I want it, too.

Coming into this quarter I knew the basics of sewing, finger weaving, and I used to make Ojos de Dios when I was younger. For setting my goals I wasn’t very confident of my skills. I really liked the look and how many designs you could make with macrame and I wanted to try and learn how to make a wall hanging. I wanted to learn more than one topic so I decided to do most of my macrame project and look up knots at home and learn how to knit during class. I do have to admit it was a challenge to learn both at once, luckily I had a friend to help with kitting. For learning how to make a macrame wall hanging I researched knots and got the material. I was able to somewhat finish my goal, doing kitting and my macrame wall hanging was quite a bit all at once. I ended up dropping kitting to focus on macrame and I started taking it to class, but I still learned how to knit somewhat. I have a basic skill of it and understand how to do it very much more than before this class. I wish I had more time to devote to knitting but it was a very positive experience learning it.
I learned the basics of knitting and how to create a macrame wall hanging. I was very drawn to macrame because of the look of the knots with the clothesline and I liked the idea of many possibilities for designs, to make it my own. Macrame was created by Arabic weavers in the 13th century, and traveled through Spain into Europe. It came to England in the late 17th century, and it is said that Queen Mary II taught it to her ladies-in-waiting. Sailors used to make and sell macrame, which spread it to different regions. Macrame started with Arabic weavers but spread to different parts of the world, each place making it their own and using it for different reasons. My advice to anyone making a macrame piece of artwork would be to look at step by step pictures, the videos are fun but they can move very fast and it can be hard to understand how to make the knot. I liked the idea of knitting because I thought it was a good skill to learn. The oldest knitted object was from Egypt, and there are other objects that indicate it was from the Middle East and spread out to other countries. Knitting was and still is a very important skill to learn, to make clothing against the weather. It used to be more of an essential skill to make clothing, like sewing. I learned how to knit the Continental style, but I had a good friend who helped me through all the steps and that really helped me understand and learn the technique. My advice is to have a friend help you and make sure you don’t pull the yarn too much because it will make it hard to loop your needles, also be careful to keep the yarn on the needles.
Personally I’ve never really considered myself an artist, I was never good at drawing or painting. At first I didn’t think there was another type of art style then those and I gave up the hope of being an artist, but this class really opened my mind to other types of art and all the possibilities they can bring. For my goals as an artist, I really want to learn and look more into fabric arts because I feel I understand and am better with fabric arts than anything I’ve tried in the past. Learning different knots for macrame has broadened my horizon to learning similar styles, which is my goal. I think my macrame wall hanging turned out better than I expected. I thought I would only be able to learn a couple of knots but with the help of others, I was able to learn a more complex knot that I feel really made the whole thing better. From doing my macrame wall hanging it has helped me learn other types of fabric arts that have to do with knots such as a friendship bracelet, learning the basics of knitting has inspired me to try it again and hopefully with the basics down I can master it.

I knew a lot about fiber arts, but I was excited to learn more. My goals for this quarter where to learn a little more about fiber arts and to have fun. I was able to do that but it was a little hard at first. I had a hard time finding something where I could learn.
I only finished one piece, but I learned a lot from it. I completed a weaving with a cat face on it. I wanted to do weaving because Deb told me to weave. I wanted to try all of them but Deb said, “ What are you doing? How about you weave?”, so I did. Weaving is a very old kind of fiber art. In greek mythology weaving was invented by the goddess Minerva. In other cultures it was invented in other ways, but it is so old that nobody knows where it came from. If you are trying to find success weaving, I would suggest not pulling too hard, because then the middle of your weaving gets pulled and then it looks ridiculous. It takes time, but be patient, and it will look good.
My work does not look as good as I had hoped, but it still looks good. My cat likes it, so that is good. This will influence my future art by maybe reminding me that art can come in many forms, not just paintings, and vases, but also in rugs and tapestries.

Coming into this class, I knew the basics of crochet, but I had never actually made anything big. The best I had done was a half finished hat. That’s why I wanted to do something new to me, and something that would take me all quarter. So I decided to crochet a blanket out of squares. I thought that it would look better with a black outline, so I did that also. My mother suggested that I should use double crocheting, so I also had to learn that. To create my blanket, I used crocheting to make the squares, and sewing to attach them. I was sadly unable to complete my blanket, even though I worked on it Almost every day, leaving me with a wonderful piece of modern art. I will probably finish it at home, or in a future art class. Also, in art class, I showed Milo how to finger knit, and decided to spend a couple hours finger knitting. I normally do stuff out of cardboard and hot glue, so it was fun to do some yarn stuff for a change.

When I entered this class, I honestly did not know it was fiber arts, and did not know how to do anything in the fiber arts category. My goal for this quarter was to learn how to sew. I challenged myself by trying to make a pillow that was sewn on to my binder, and I did not succeed, although I did make a very large pillow. I was not able to sew the pillow to my binder because my binder was too thick, although that did help me become better at sewing and tying knots.
I learned how to sew and do ojo de dios. I really wanted to learn how to sew because it will help me later on in life. A piece of advice I would offer to someone about [sewing] is to do multiple stitches on one spot to make it stronger. For Ojo de Dios, I wanted to do it because I saw Owen's and thought that they were awesome. They also have a religious symbolic meaning which is to see the future and watch over the dead.
My goals were to learn how to knit and sew, in this class I did learn how to sew, maybe I will learn knitting later this year, my big pillow turned out smaller than I expected, because I thought it would be big enough to be able to sit on.

I didn’t know very much at all coming into this fiber arts class. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, but when I saw friendship bracelets, I knew I wanted to learn how to make them. My goal for the quarter was to learn how to make as many friendship bracelets as I could. When I started to make friendship bracelets I didn’t know at all what to do, it was a struggle. Then Sophia helped me learn how to make one of the easiest ones. Once I made that one, which didn’t turn out that well, I slowly got better at the pattern and made some more complicated ones. I’m taking away the memorization of many friendship bracelets and learned how to make the Ojo de Dios, which wasn’t as hard as it looks. I was able to meet the goals that I set for myself, which was to learn at least five friendship bracelets, and then I started to do Ojo de Dios.
I feel that I have accomplished very much in this art class, spending the amount of time that I did on friendship bracelets allowed me to memorize all the ones that I worked on. The Ojo de Dios was not as hard as I imagined and I accomplished working on that. Being able to make friendship bracelets whenever I want, and having it be easier to learn the ones I didn’t work on. Friendship bracelets are simple, they are just a bunch of knots that all fit together into a bracelet and look very nice. I’ve pretty much wanted to learn how to make friendship bracelets and now I finally have, learning them was very fun but I couldn't seem to learn from all the tutorials, and then Sophia helped me. When Sophia helped me, I learned fast and was able to try more than I expected. The Ojo de Dios was fun once you got the pattern of over two, back around one, than you could do it.
The hardest part about ojo de dios was tying it off after I finished, which I found hot glue to use.

My overall thoughts of this class is it was fun and I learned a lot, I still do have more goals that I want to meet at some point, such as learning how to finger knit. I didn't have time to get to finger knitting, because I spent a lot of time on friendship bracelets, and time slipped away from me. When I first started trying to learn how to make friendship bracelets, watching all the tutorial videos, it was hard to see what they were doing in the videos. I think my work did turn out how I wanted it to, maybe even better than I thought it would. In the future I will now be able to make them for people in the future whenever I want, thanks to this art class.

What was known?
Coming into this quarter I knew a little bit about fiber arts. I had known what type of materials were commonly used while making a fiber arts project. When I was setting goals for this quarter I was thinking about making a macrame project and possibly a project involving cross stitching techniques. I was hoping to create a macrame wall hanging. I did make one but it was not as big as I was planning on in the beginning. This is because of not having enough material and not having enough time. I was overall happy with how my work turned out at the end of the quarter.

What did you accomplish?
I became more familiar with macrame and embroidery.
I think this class opened me up to learning more styles of art. I now feel more motivated to complete projects and to try new things. I wish I had more time in this class, but I feel pretty accomplished with how my projects turned out. I learned a lot from this class and I am happy that I was put in this class. I will likely experiment with more fiber art practices in the future.
I became more familiar with macrame and embroidery.
- Macrame- I created a macrame wall hanging and dyed it different shades of lilac with paint. I had known that macrame involved some techniques that were similar to making friendship bracelets. The macrame technique was originated during the 13th century by Arab weavers who used macrame to tie off the ends of hand-woven textiles with different types of knots. My recommendation to someone else who would like to try macrame is to use more string because the string becomes shorter quickly from the knots that are tied on the project.
- Embroidery- I created an embroidery project that had stars and a crescent moon embroidered on it. I was interested in making an embroidery project because I felt like I had more freedom to create shapes with round edges. The process of embroidery is dated back to the Warring States period in China in the 5th-3rd century BC. Now it is inherited by the next generations of civilizations as a part of their culture. My recommendation to someone else who would like to try embroidery is to plan what they want the project to look like in the end.

WHAT WAS KNOWN
First coming into the year I didn’t even know the subject of the art class. When I first heard it was fiber arts I wasn’t super excited (no offense), I didn’t know anything about fiber arts. I only knew a few kinds of fiber arts like crocheting and knitting, but I didn’t know how to do either.
For my goals, I wanted to learn at least one form of fiber art that looked comprehensive. Like I said before, I had basically no idea what fiber arts were but I continued until I got the hang of it. I feel I met my goals pretty well, I was able to learn two fiber arts, cross-stitch and finger knitting. The second part of my goals for cross-stitch was a little less successful. I think I went a little too ambitious. I thought it was going to be easy and wasn’t going to take too much time. What I learn about setting goals is to start with learning the new material find out how fast you are at it then move into how big/complex you want your final project to be.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
One of my goals as an artist is to know more than one art form so I can be ‘flexible’ so if I want to do ceramics or fiber art instead of painting/drawing I can do that easily. And I feel if I know more than one art form I can extend my boundaries. I also think it’s a good thing to know more than one form of art because it’s really fun. My project didn’t work out exactly how I thought it would, I think I was too ambitious and I didn’t really know how to do cross-stitch well yet. After about five weeks I hadn’t made a lot of progress, so I decided to make a more abstract kind of modern style of cross-stitch. After this quarter I can really start to get into a cross-stitch project on my own time because I don’t have any deadlines so I can plan out and practice a lot. Maybe in a couple of months, I will have a cross-stitch project looking like what I wanted in the class.

WHAT DID YOU ACCOMPLISH
In this quarter I learned cross-stitch and finger knitting. I wanted to do cross-stitch because I really liked how it looked. I liked how each cross-stitch just looked perfectly placed and looked natural. I also really like Bob Ross style nature portraits and I had seen a lot of nature view cross-stitch. Nobody really knows where it began, but the earliest found cross-stitch style was in the 6th-Century, 500 to 600 B.C.E. It can be found in the East. For someone trying to get into cross-stitch, I would say take your time, don’t start too ambitious and try to really picture what you want your finished project to be.
For my second fiber art, I focused on finger knitting. I was first interested in it because it saw some people doing it and it looked fun. People believe that finger knitting originated from Egypt with the first artifact of finger knitting found from around the 11th-century, 1000 to 1100 C.E. During the 11th-century finger knitting was more important because it was used for clothing. Some finger knitted artifacts were buried in tombs in Egypt. My piece of advice for people trying finger knitting is that it’s pretty easy and fun to get into.

Coming into this course, I did have a bit of prior knowledge and abilities that have to do with fiber arts, as I knew how to sew, crochet, and do macrame. The reason I chose to take this class, and one of my goals was to learn new techniques. I think I accomplished that, as I completed two pieces of artwork. One thing that did not work out quite as well as I hoped was the amount of time I spent on my first piece.
This quarter, the fiber arts techniques I learned are embroidery and creating an ojo de dio. I was drawn to learning embroidery because I found it fascinating that you can create something almost resembling a painting out of thread. I was also interested in embroidery because it’s a very old technique and is not often used these days, and I wanted to try something unusual. This considered, I decided to make a picture of a fox. I had a fun time making my stitches look like fur and trying to make the picture realistic.
My inspiration for creating an ojo de dio was the technique itself. The way it’s done is weaving in a circle around a pair of sticks and I was curious about what I could do with it. Ojo de dio, called eye of the god, come from the native american people, and they represent exactly what they are called. I enjoyed creating an ojo de dio because you can get really creative with different colors and patterns.
As an artist, my overall goals are to learn new techniques and enjoy what I’m doing. Both of these projects helped me meet my goals, and I am really happy with how they both turned out. Learning these techniques might influence my art in the future as they helped me understand fiber arts better in general.

When I arrived into this class I did not know that much about fiber arts. The only thing that I knew was knitting but I did not know how to cast on so I could not do it. My goals was to learn new things and to try my hardest. I think that I met my goals since I learned two new things. I challenged myself by making things that I had no idea how to do.
I made a cross stitch with my initials and watercolor background. I also made a friendship bracelet with three different colors. I was drawn to my first technique because one of my friends were doing cross stitch and it looked cool. I wanted to make a friendship bracelet because I have always wanted to learn how to do them. Cross stitch and friendship bracelets don’t have any cultural other than after making a friendship bracelet you give it to a friend.
I don’t have any goals of being an artist in the future, I just have fun doing art. I thought I did pretty well for my level of skill and I am happy that I learned new things.

I knew very little about fiber arts at the start of the quarter. All I knew was how to thread a needle. At the start of the quarter I really didn’t have a goal or any idea of what I was going to do, I just saw sewing and thought that I wanted to learn that so I guess I surpassed my goal because I also learned how to make ojo de Dios.
This quarter I learned how to sew pillows and other things and I learned how to make ojo de dios.
This quarter I learned how to sew pillows and other things and I learned how to make ojo de dios.
One of the reasons that I was drawn to sewing is because it is very useful to repair clothes and you can make cool pillows. Bone needles have been discovered at prehistoric fossil sites around the world they were probably used by prehistoric humans to repair clothing.
One of the reasons I was drawn to ojos de días is because they are simple and they look really cool. Ojos De Dias are religious symbols of native Americans in Mexico and the American southwest they help them see the future and understand things that they can’t yet and watch over their dead.
Some of my goals as an artist is to try a lot of different styles, techniques, and mediums. I think that I worked towards that goal this quarter because I have never sewn before or made Ojos de Dias before. I think that my work pretty much turned how I thought it would. I think that this inspired me to do more fiber arts work because I have never really tried fiber arts before.

I knew about knitting and I had done some knitting before in Mike’s class, but that’s all I knew about fiber arts. I challenged myself by trying cross stitch. I met my goal and finished my cross stitch. I was able to finish my cross stitch because I worked on it at home.
I did a cross stitch of the word “Bazinga”. I was drawn to cross stitch because it looks like pixel art. Cross stitch is the oldest type of embroidery and it has been around since the Middle Ages all over the world.
I don’t really have any goals as an artist. Cross stitching was fun, but I don’t plan to continue doing it. My work turned out how I expected it to. I might do cross stitch again in the future if I’m in a fiber arts class again.

Coming into this quarter of art I only knew how to sew stuff and make stuffed animals. I was mainly here to learn new ways to do art and have fun. My goals were to make a tennis square or circle in a tennis racket and I succeeded. I did not work out how there are so many knots in a ball of yarn.
In this quarter I accomplished making a tennis square in a tennis racket. I was drawn to this because I like tennis the sport. I also made several pillows and learned to finger knit. Finger knitting was created in 1589 and i couldn't figure out who made it or why it was created.
My overall thoughts are that this was very fun . I will take this class again and I will want to learn more about art. My work turned out like I imagined it to and i am very happy with it.

When I entered this class I didn't know how to do any sewing or anything. I didn't have any goals but to learn how to do something cool. I ended up meeting this goal by learning how to sew pillows, stuffed animals and how to weave.
I was attracted to sewing because I thought it would be really fun to make pillows for myself and my dog. In 1790, that the first sewing machine was invented by the British inventor Thomas Saint. Earlier, in 1755, Karl Weisenthal, a German inventor, devised the first sewing machine needle, but did not produce a complete machine. I recommend when you are sewing a pillow to use the normal stitch and then a whip stitch, then leave a small hole to turn the pillow inside out, fill it with stuffing and then sew the small hole closed.
The only goal I had in this class was to make pillows for people and I made a pillow for me, my puppy, Kelly and Augy. most of the time the project didn't turn out how I wanted, but still turned out good enough. The second thing I learned was how to weave. John Kay invented the flying shuttle in 1733 and enabled weaving of wider fabric as well as made it faster. Advise I'd give for weaving is to make sure you get the pattern right or else it can be very annoying to fix.
I didn't have any goals as an artist to make fiber art stuff but this class just seemed really fun and it was. My work overall satisfied me and I feel accomplished. Will probably inspire my future artwork by increasing the chances of me making pillows, as I used to intend to only draw and paint.

When I came into this class I pretty much only knew how to finger knit roughly, which I learned in 4th grade. When I made my goals I didn’t really follow through with my goal sheet and I branched off into stuff I was actually more interested in. I originally wanted to learn how to cross stitch but I quickly switched over to making friendship bracelets and learned new ones and enjoyed that a lot. I wish I followed through with the cross-stitching at the beginning of the quarter and did a few friendship bracelets at the end of the quarter.
I successfully completed 3 types of friendship bracelets. My friend said he was going to make some friendship bracelets and asked me if I wanted to also, and I’ve been wanting to learn how to make some friendship bracelets for a few months by then so I wanted to do it. These bracelets are a sign of friendship with another person and represent that, and when you are no longer friends with the person you made that bracelet with you are supposed to cut it off to end the friendship. The Chinese Staircase bracelet is the most simple and good looking friendship bracelet that you can make in my opinion, most beginners should be able to learn this simple bracelet. Also, this quarter in just 3 days I’ve finger-knitted over 20 feet. I’ve done finger-knitting before back in 4th grade and made a small scarf for my mom and then stopped, so for this quarter when Deb said something about it I remembered I tried it and I wanted to try it again, Finger-knitting is super fun and really easy you can make really cool things like scarfs, and its a really good pastime.
I really like the fiber arts, it’s probably the thing I’m best at in art and the thing I most enjoy in art, so I’d like to learn how to Knit and get good at it. Remembering how to finger knit introduced me back into the world of fiber arts, and I might just get back into the fiber arts because my mom is a very good knitter and has all of the equipment I would need to knit or anything else. My work turned out very nice, I am happy with everything I made this quarter, all of my friendship bracelets are really good and my finger knitting was very cool for me and my friends to see how long I could get it to be. Like I said earlier getting back into finger knitting has gotten me interested in Knitting and other fiber arts, and my mom can help me with knitting because she has everything I need and more.
