I think that I learned a lot about how not to mix colors, especially after accidentally adding too much blue into the red and making dark grey when trying to make red-violet. I think that printmaking is a cool skill to have, and it would be neat to incorporate it into something I do in the future, even if I have no idea what that would be.

Before being in the printmaking art class, I hardly had any idea how printmaking worked. I understood what it was, but had no idea what tools were used or how. I thought learning about what linoleum is was pretty cool. I didn’t know that linoleum even existed before this class.
I think printmaking is one of my favorite art forms now.
I wish I could take the class again. |
When we started this class I had no idea what we were going to do or what printmaking really was. My extent of printing knowledge was screen printing and printing with type, neither of which we did. In this class we learned how to use carving tools and carve linoleum, known as linocutting. We learned safety with sharp objects and other tips to make carving easier. We also learned a cool tracing tip to make more realistic and proportional carvings. I learned about negative and positive space, light, and shading. I also discovered just how much you can do with printmaking, I didn’t know how useful it can be. You can make almost anything with block prints. We are always asked what our goals are for art but I really don’t have a lot of set goals. Art is my escape and I like to just go with whatever comes to mind. For this class I really just wanted to understand the process and materials and make something that I was somewhat proud of. I think I accomplished both of those.
For my first linocut I made a print of an unidentifiable rodent skull (likely a cat or a raccoon) with vines in the background. I did a kind of reverse design with one side being positive space (the design being left uncut so it shows up inked) and one side negative space (the design cut out so that the background is inked.) Part if this was because I was lazy and it is a lot easier and less time consuming to do negative space, but I think it looks pretty cool. |
For my second carving I recreated a ship I had drawn last fall named The Royal Poet. This ship is based off of an older British Royal Navy ship and named after The Dead Poets Society which is one of my favorite movies. Carving this was really tedious and took way too long but I am glad I challenged myself to do it and I think it turned out pretty well. Printmaking is a really fun and diverse media and I would like to do more with it in the future.
Before this art class, the only thing I knew about printmaking was that you put ink on something that was carved, then transfer it to a piece of paper. Before the quarter I could not draw anything realistically but now I can. I liked learning the different techniques with the carving tools, and how to use linoleum. At first I thought reduction prints would look weird, but after I did them they looked really cool. I don’t have many goals as an artist, just drawing more regularly, and be able to draw realistically. I would like to use printmaking for cards and presents. Printmaking is really cool, I might try it at my house with styrofoam, and use it for cards.
I knew virtually nothing about printmaking before this class. I just thought of rubber stamps that people carved with random tools. I knew nothing about the specific tools needed for printmaking. I knew no techniques, and I didn’t know at all how to apply the ink.
I appreciate learning about how to use the carving tools on the linoleum. I know that you have to always carve away from yourself, and keep your pointer finger on the top of the tool so you don’t cut yourself. I also learned how to effectively mix the colours of ink and apply them to the linoleum. You have to use a plastic knife or spoon to put the ink onto the plexiglass, and then mix the colours with the knife. You then use the brayer to spread the ink onto your linoleum. I also learned that you can make lines closer or farther apart, and use that to create darker or lighter values.

My goals are to get better at realistic art. I also want to get better at mixing colours while painting. In this class we had to make a print of an actual thing by looking at it, and this helped teach me more about drawing realistically. We also learned about a way to draw realistically by closing one eye, and not moving your head, and tracing the lines. This class opened a whole new world of art for me, and I think in the future I would like to do more carving and printmaking.
This is now one of my favourite types of art. I love how you can reuse the prints, and use them in different colours. I know so much more about it now, and I’m very glad that I do.

Before this art class, I knew very little about printmaking. All I knew about printmaking was the basic idea that you made something kind of like a stamp. There are two things that I most appreciate learning about in this class: I learned how to properly use a brayer by making sure there isn't too much ink on the brayer by listening for the crackling sound. I learned how to safely carve on linoleum by using the wood carving bench to stop the linoleum from moving around. My goal as an artist is to get better at using a variety of tools. I think this class helped me with that goal because so many different elements go into making one print, and I got to learn about all of them. My overall thoughts on printmaking are that printmaking is a very complicated art medium. However, it is worth it because printmaking has a unique look.

I have done printmaking before this class. My dad makes lino-block prints regularly so I had knowledge from that. I improved my carving skills a lot this quarter. I learned how to use line thickness to express value. I also learned how to use the “tracing” technique. I plan on doing more printmaking at home. This class taught me how to deal with overlapping lines and how to design a print better. I like to carve because I find it relaxing. Before this class i was interested in woodblock printing; I like the process.

I knew it was a thing, I just had no idea how the prints were made or what in the world linoleum was. I appreciate everything I learned! I think it is all valuable information, and now I can (and Probably will) use this in the future. Whether it be just for fun or making a logo for a business. The “printmaking Skills” taught me how to have extreme control over whatever I am using to print, draw and paint. The goals I want to set for myself for printmaking in the future are: I would like to be more precise and become better at shading and over all have more control and confidence over what I do.

I think I might be a “little” obsessed with this project >..<
Blade Safety:1. Never put your fingers in front of the blade
2. Watch what you are doing 3. Never pushed the blade forward when not looking 4. Always pushed the blade slowly and carefully |

Before this class the only thing I knew about printmaking was that is was like stamps. I might have known more about printmaking, but now that I know so much, it’s hard to remember a time where I didn’t know much. It’s kinda like after you learn how to read, you realize how difficult it is to live without reading. Words are just all around us, even when we don’t realize it.

I most appreciate learning about the carving tools and reduction prints. Most of the stuff like brayers and different ways to print aren’t as important because if you didn’t have a brayer you could just use a paintbrush if you wanted to make a print. The same concept applies to the techniques because some of them I would discover eventually, or I could look for a tutorial online. The actual carving is harder to learn online because if you have a question it is harder to get answered. Reduction prints you could learn online, but it is harder to learn online I think. Another important thing we learned was safety. We still had 8 injuries🤕.
I don’t really know what my goals as an artist are. All my life I’ve loved art, and when I was little I wanted to be a sculptor, but I’m not sure what I want to be when I grow up now. The one thing I do know is that even though I don’t know what I want to be, I now have the option to be a printmaker. I know that I’ve always loved crafting and 3D art forms more that drawing, and if I had to choose an art job I would choose one that does 3D art.

My overall thoughts on printmaking have changed drastically because I never really had thoughts on it. I love printmaking now, and would never trade this class for any other class. It was an amazing experience and taught me so much. I can now sketch, trace, carve, and print (in many ways, may I add) a piece. I most prefer using linoleum because it is so much stronger and it’s easier to tell if you carved down deep enough.
I did not know anything about printmaking before I took this class. I’m glad I got to learn how to use the tools correctly and safely, and how to create different textures. I wanted to explore different styles and ways of creating art, and this class was a different way of creating art. I think I may continue printmaking at home with the tools I have. Printmaking is fun and kind of relaxing minus the chance of stabbing your finger.

Before the class I didn’t know anything about printmaking, I thought it was like stenciling. I chose printmaking because it sounded interesting. One of the things I liked learning was the color transition, it looked really cool when it was done right. I also liked learning how to add contrast to the print by making the lines closer or further apart. I like doing art, so I would probably do more printmaking if there was another class, but I don’t have any of the materials at home.
My thoughts overall is that printmaking is pretty fun, and I could definitely learn to do it better. I find it interesting that printmaking is also art, and that there is so many ways to make art.

Before I started this printmaking class I did not know really anything at all about printmaking. I wanted to learn about it but did not really have access to the tools and information needed to pursue printmaking. Learning about the process of creating a print was really fun and interesting. I enjoyed when the owner of Roos Roast came in and talked about how printmaking has affected his business, and then proceeded to create a print to show how he does it. In the future I would like to learn more about printmaking with other materials such as metal and plastic. I really want to use these skills that I have learned from this class later in life, it would be helpful if I want to create things using this technique, like posters or shirts. I really enjoy making prints and the whole process that comes with it, the drawing, carving, and printing.
My goals as an artist are really just being the best one I can, and I really feel that every art class I take I get better. The value and contrast we learned about could definitely help me in paintings or drawings that need depth or contrast. Printmaking was a very fun class and was a much better class than I thought it would be.
When I started off I knew absolutely nothing about printmaking. When we started I thought it was screen printing. I liked learning about how to make art in different ways, the different angles, and the different ways to overlap. It was also cool to to know how to do a gradient. One pf my goals as an artist is to just learn new things until I find my favorite and I really like printmaking. My overall thoughts on printmaking are that it is really fun and there are so many cool things you can do with it. I would definitely want to do more printmaking in the future.
Before this class, I barely knew anything about printmaking. The only thing I knew was the design making part. Some things about this class I most enjoyed were: using the carving tools and learning the safety tips. I never knew how to use these tools before and they were a lot less scary as I thought they would be originally. I liked the realistic drawing technique. I am planning on using it in some of my other drawings in the future. I learned a lot about how to get the angles right and how to get the textures correct when carving.
My favorite part was using the linoleum for carving. Before this, I had never heard of linoleum ever. It was a great learning experience and they were very fun to carve. I have discovered that I enjoy and I am better at drawing than I thought I was. I will definitely be using the realistic drawing technique in the future. This was one of my favorite electives and I am interested in taking this elective another time if it is offered. I have discovered that this is my new favorite type of art and I am also more interested in art over all now. |
Before taking this class on printmaking, I really didn’t even know what it was. But I learned a lot about textures and lines and even things like patience and working slowly and carefully, which can sometimes be hard for me. This class really helped me because I feel like art is such an important skill to have for business and logos and such.
Also its just really fun!
